Mike Nicholson, PGA Professional at Thirsk & Northallerton Golf Club, has over twenty two years’ experience teaching juniors of all ages and ability levels. Mike is passionate about making the game and learning process fun and enjoyable for both boys and girls. Last year the club followed the Junior Golf Passport scheme for the academy juniors but this year any junior who would like to join the scheme will be encouraged by Mike to do so. They will have access to the benefits of the Golf Passport Scheme, including the online element which shows that “golf is moving with the times.” The extensive games and exercise plans will help to keep the sessions fresh and interesting and the focus on fun ensures the programme is accessible to children of all abilities. Children can chart their progress either online or by using the booklet giving them a real sense of achievement at the end of each lesson.

Mike feels that communication with parents is paramount so the Juniors have a Facebook page where parents can find out about all the things we will be doing and making it easier for parents and the coach to communicate.

Mike would like to see more young golfers and their parents playing regularly at Thirsk & Northallerton Golf Club. This year’s programme will have two aims. One, to increase junior participation and grow the junior section and two, move more juniors from the practice ground onto the course and into regular golf activity. We will be holding regular events and monthly competitions for junior members.

For those juniors who enjoy the more competitive side, we have been regular finalists in the Harrogate Union Junior League and winners last year. These matches are played home and away throughout the year.
